photoYes, I purposely capitalized my title…that’s how serious I am about how ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS this cake is.  I am not easily impressed with healthy deserts.  Although I am “Drug Free Pharmacist” and make a point to make healthy decisions in life, I have a sweet tooth and grew up, like many kids, on chocolate bars, candies and sugar filled cakes.  So when I try different healthy, or gluten-free recipes I am simply not impressed with the taste or texture (ie the density of coconut flour) and often do not even finish my serving.

That all changed today.

A while back I stumbled upon a recipe by Modern Alternative Mama and bookmarked it.  This morning I decided to give it a try.  Boy am I glad I did.  The funny thing is, after commenting on how delicious the cake was, every person I had try it had pretty much the same response:  “What did you say was it in?!?!”  See for yourself 🙂

Here is her recipe:

  • 3 cups of cooked White Beans <—–YES White Beans!  That’s the main ingredient!!  Who would have thought it could taste so good??!  (I used dry organic Great Northern beans that I soaked and sprouted the night before…then I cooked them in the morning until soft)
  • 9 tbsp of Coconut Oil
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 tbsp of Vanilla (I scraped the inside of a Vanilla Bean)
  • 3/4 tsp of Sea Salt
  • 1 tsp of Baking Soda (remember aluminum free)

You then blend all the ingredients until smooth and place in two 9-inch well-greased pans and bake at 350 for approximately 35-40 min.  That easy!  I took about 3 tablespoons of honey and 1/2 a cup of organic blueberries and mixed over a low heat from my topping.

You just HAVE try this!  And please let me know when you do!

Boycotting Organic!!

Posted: December 23, 2012 in Organic Food

ImageI am mad.  Very mad.  I make my kids green smoothies daily, juice fresh oranges and carrots regularly, I never use sugar, I dehydrate kale to make kale chips.  I do my best to fill their little bodies with what is good for them.  Yesterday was definitely an exception.  I personally handed my children a box full of MSG’s.  You know, that additive that tricks your body into thinking it’s not full so you will eat more.  The poison that companies like McDonalds are notorious for using. What??!  Yes you read correctly.  I gave my children MSG’s.  I don’t normally buy my children snacks like crackers, chips etc.  Even the organic ones often use ingredients I am not too fond of.  I stick with natural and healthy snacks, dried mangoes (my kids’ ultimate favorite) or cut-up apples, raisins etc.   We had a road trip yesterday and I stopped at the grocery store before we left.  I had a coupon for a free box of any Annie’s all natural product.  I have a hard time saying “No” to “Free” and so I thought I would pick up a box of crackers for my kids.  I have been wary of Annie’s for some time now, not all of their products are organic.  Their packaging is misleading, you have to look very carefully at their box to see if it is either “ORGANIC” or simply “ALL NATURAL” which really means nothing to me.  Items that are ALL NATURAL do not have to follow any strict regulations for their ingredients like being ORGANIC does.  Something deemed ALL NATURAL could be full of GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) , high fructose corn syrup and many other poisoning ingredients.

Ok, back to the grocery store.  In a rush I skimmed through the Annie’s section quickly and grabbed the first box of ORGANIC cheese crackers I saw.  I broke a cardinal rule of mine in the process.  I didn’t read the ingredients.  I assumed ORGANIC was fine and threw the box in my shopping cart.

Fast forward 8 hours.  We took a road trip to Canada and I passed the box of crackers to my kids.  They were excited, since it is not something I normally buy for them.  They ate the entire box throughout the trip.  When we arrived to my mother’s home in Canada my husband unloaded the car,  Somehow the empty box of Annie’s ORGANIC crackers ended up on the kitchen counter.  I picked up the box and turned it to it’s side to read the ingredients.  Why I didn’t do that before is beyond me.  I was devastated.  Staring right back at me was YEAST EXTRACT.

Why am I complaining about that now too?  Wasn’t this article about how the crackers contained MSG’s?  Well, the beauty of the food industry is that the words MSG or monosodium glutamate does not have to actually appear on an ingredients list containing this poison.  There are many cleverly disguised names for the MSG’s that trick the consumer into thinking it is MSG free (see below).  Yeast Extract is one of them.  And so although I am not boycotting ORGANIC in general (that would be crazy), I am however officially boycotting Annie’s products.  A company that will sneak MSG’s into products they call ORGANIC will not be in my home.  Trust is huge with me.

I will leave you with a partial list of hidden names for MSG’s.  More can be found here:

Glutamic acid

Monosodium glutamate

Monopotassium glutamate

Calcium glutamate

Monoammonium glutamate

Magnesium glutamate

Natrium glutamate

Yeast extract

Anything “hydrolyzed”

Any “hydrolyzed protein”

Calcium caseinate,  Sodium caseinate

Yeast food, Yeast nutrient

Autolyzed yeast

Now that I have shared my mistake I hope that you will all learn from it.  Read, read and read some more before putting anything into your bodies!!

Best Moisturizer EVER!

Posted: December 13, 2011 in Natural Remedies

With the winter months upon us many are beginning to feel the unwanted results of of cold, dry weather.  I was recently asked what I recommend for dry skin.

Funny thing is, I almost always respond with the same answer when asked for a  “natural” or alternative remedy for any sort of skin ailment.  True, there are plenty of all natural or organic lotions on the market, ones that may even score well on (if you haven’t checked out this website yet, it’s a MUST, they categorize all skin/health care products according to their safety and/or level of harmfulness to the body).   However my all time favorite moisturizer is not normally found in your local drugstore, but instead can actually be found in your cupboard!

Not only does my favorite moisturizer work wonders on your skin, it can also:

-get rid of embarrassing dandruff when massaged into the scalp

-help regulate blood pressure and cholesterol levels

-increase your metabolism helping with weight loss

-treat eczema

So what is this miracle “drug”?

Coconut Oil.  That’s right, simple coconut oil is my all time favorite moisturizer and will do all of the above and more.  Remember, I won’t put anything on my skin that I wouldn’t eat (here’s a link to why) so coconut oil is the perfect answer to many, if not all, of your skin care needs.  It moisturizes like nothing I have ever seen before, keeping your skin unbelievably nourished and healthy.  Key point here is it’s healthy.  When using coconut oil for yourself or your children you don’t have to worry about any harmful chemicals seeping through your skin and causing your body damage.  It’s all natural and good for you!  There are plenty of brands of coconut oil out there, however, be sure to get one that is Organic and Extra Virgin.  Also,  remember I hate plastic (click here to find out why and here for a great article about toxic plastics from our friends at and so  it’s best to find one that comes in a glass jar.  Give it a try, and let us know what you think.  I’m certain that once you do you won’t go back to any other type of moisturizer!  Yes it’s that good!

TOXINS in YOUR bedroom

Posted: November 2, 2011 in Solutions, Toxic Chemicals
A Healthier Night's Sleep

A Healthier Night's Sleep

Newsflash: You have toxins in your bedroom.  Not maybe, or perhaps, or even probably, you simply do.   The sad reality is, in most cases the air inside your home is far worse than what you breathe outside.  That’s right, car exhaust, pollution, etc. that fills our outdoor air can in fact be less harmful than the air in our homes.

What am I talking about?!?!

Ever think the beds you lay to sleep on every night and spend as much as 1/3 of your life on could be doused in something as horrid as cancer causing formaldehyde?!  Hard to believe but unfortunately very true.  The United States has strict flammability laws when it comes to mattresses.  According to these standards, mattresses need to be flame retardant in order to protect us from fire.   Unfortunately what is used to make our beds flame retardant isn’t so safe.   Chemicals such as Boric Acid, Antimony (a heavy metal similar to arsenic), PBDE’s (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers) and formaldehyde can be found in most conventional mattresses.  What’s worse is the fact that by simply going to sleep on our comfortable mattresses our bodies absorbs these toxic chemicals every night.  The above listed chemicals are known to cause anything from headaches to reproductive damage to even cancer in high doses.  Not such a pleasant night’s sleep after all.

So what do we do?

If you’ve ever looked online or in stores for Organic mattresses you know the price for a healthy night’s sleep is high.  Organic mattresses,  wool mattresses, etc. can cost a pretty penny (usually 4 digits!), and when you have a family it seems almost impossible to be able to afford natural bedding for everyone.   If buying new mattresses is not an option for your family, here are a couple suggestions based on what we’ve used in our home:

Keep your distance

The closer you are to your mattress the more your body will absorb.  We’ve used extra blankets, comforters, sheets etc and placed them on top of our mattress creating more of a barrier between us and our mattress.  You can then place your sheets (organic if possible) on top of this barrier.

Make your own mattress

We’ve used 100% organic mattress pads and stuffed them to make our own mattress.  Again, blankets, comforters, sheets etc can be used.   You can even use pillows!  We then used kid cots and placed our homemade mattress on the cot creating a comfortable mattress like bed.  The kids loved it!

Buy some plants!

Plants?  Nature has some amazing abilities!!   Various plants are known to absorb chemicals in the air.   We experienced how amazing this was first hand.  Earlier this year we installed new flooring in our home.  We purchased flooring that met the strictest standards for the lowest amount possible of formaldehyde emission (yes, flooring too often has formaldehyde used in the adhesive).  Prior to installing the floor I had read up on plants and their ability to absorb formaldehyde (as much as 1800 micrograms per hour) and so we purchased a plant for every room in our home that we were installing flooring in.  In re-arranging the rooms, moving furniture for the new flooring, etc. we accidentally placed two plants in one of the bedrooms and no plants in our bedroom.  Upon entering our bedroom I noticed there was a smell from the boxed flooring, a smell that none of the other rooms had.  I then realized our mistake and put the extra plant in our bedroom.  Within a an hour or so the smell was gone!  How amazing is that?

Some plants that are known to absorb formaldehyde are:

  • English ivy
  • Weeping Fig
  • Bamboo palm
  • Chinese evergreen
  • Gerbera daisy
  • Peace lily
  • Pot mum
  • Spider plant

Open your windows

Let the toxins out and the let the fresh air in.  Opening your windows helps circulate and clean out indoor air.  Whenever possible open your windows and breathe!

Don’t give up!

A lot of times I get posts/comments from readers saying it’s so overwhelming and feels impossible to tackle all of these ‘toxic hurdles’.  Remember, one step at a time.  Do what you can do one step at a time, and a year from now you can look back and see the progress made.  One of my favorite videos is A Wake Up Call by  Although there are no spoken words (there is music playing) the video pretty much sums it all up in a nutshell; yes we are surrounded by harmful substances daily, however each step we take in the right direction can make a difference for ourselves and our families.

Lifefactory Glass Sippy Cup

Yes, you read correctly. I don’t like BPA-free plastic, nor do I use it.  I do my best to stay away from it and have actually tossed all my plastic, including my BPA-free plastic. Confused? Let me clarify. I do not like BPA-Free Plastic, or ANY plastic for that matter.  Classifying something as BPA free does not mean it can be categorized as safe; it’s definitely better than those containing BPA however it is still not always safe.

BPA was first used commercially in 1957, however it took approximately 50 years (and numerous studies) for the FDA to revise it’s assessment on the safety of BPA.  FIFTY YEARS of being exposed to this toxic chemical DAILY before finding out how bad it was!!   So who’s to say that other chemicals commonly found in plastics today do not pose an equal, or even greater threat to our health?

Chemicals found in plastic DO leach into our foods, especially when in contact with liquids or exposed to heat. I’m not willing to take a VERY likely chance that a few years from now another study will show yet another chemical commonly found plastic is in fact toxic.

Going plastic free has not been easy, and unfortunately my journey is far from over, however when an alternative is available I go for it, regardless of what other more convenient products may be out there. One of my favorite plastic-alternative items I purchased earlier this year was a glass sippy cup by Lifefactory. The truth is I was in love with the sippy cup before I even purchased it. I mean come on now, it’s GLASS, you can’t get much safer than that!  Although the lid is plastic (I unfortunately don’t know of any sippy cups that do not have a plastic lid),  I was pleasantly surprised when I received it and was just as in love as I thought I would be. I decided to do a quick product review for any of you who may be considering purchasing one.  Check it out and let me know what you think:

Here’s  my product review:

If you’re interested in buying a sippy cup, I purchased my sippy cups on Amazon for a little over $15, here’s the link:

Would love to hear what you think!

Tasty Pasta Alternative

Posted: September 12, 2011 in Healing Cavities, Recipes

It’s been a while, I hope that everyone is staying healthy!

One of the big changes our family made when when attempting to heal my son’s mouthful of cavities was the elimination of refined grains (we recently started sprouting….more on that in future posts).  So no more commercial/organic flour or even pastas.  It was one of the toughest diet changes we made, but one that we found made the most difference in healing his cavities.

Cucumber pasta salad

Cucumber pasta salad

Giving up something you eat regularly isn’t easy and so I was on a mission to try and find tasty alternatives to my love of pasta.  It’s amazing what you can find on the internet….all you have to do is search.  When it came to substituting pasta I found many recipes online that used various vegetables and then sliced/cut them to look like pasta.  When you think about it, actual pasta doesn’t have much flavor, it’s the marinara, white sauce, etc. that you add to it that gives your meal the tastes we all have come to love.  So even if you’re not interested in eliminating refined grains, you can actually add more flavor to your meal and make it healthier by using for example cucumbers (pictured) for your next pasta salad or zucchini with your favorite marinara.  In order to make the pasta look like “spaghetti,” I purchased a spiral slicer, however investing in a slicer is not necessary. You can use a peeler to slice off ribbons that work just as well.

Another dish that is a family favorite is potatoes.  Again, I slice using a spiral slicer to get the spaghetti look (hmmm, maybe I should try to see if I can get the company to do a giveaway for one of my lucky fans!).  After slicing I cook the potatoes and add my favorite sauce.  Simple.  Delicious.

With the number of veggies out there the possibilities are endless.  If you try out any other veggies be sure to let us know.

Bon Appetit!

When Fever Strikes

Posted: June 30, 2011 in Natural Remedies

When it comes to treating fever the majority of doctors and pharmacists will recommend either Acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil).  I do not like nor use either one.  Surprised?  I didn’t think so.  Neither of the above drugs have been used in our house for approximately 2 years now, and that’s not because we haven’t had our share of fevers.

Acetaminophen is the most widely used pain relieving/fever reducing medication taken by people in the world.  It is metabolized primarily by the liver.   When taken in large doses or over a long period of time, toxicity can occur which will cause damage to the liver.  Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat fever and reduce pain and inflammation.  Regular use of NSAIDs will cause irritation to the stomach and is actually the second major cause of ulcers.

Ok, so let’s say the above drugs didn’t come with any side effects, will I run to our medicine cabinet the next time someone in the house runs a fever?  Highly unlikely.  By reducing fever we are not solving the main problem.  Ever notice how once the medication wears off the fever jumps back up?   Fever reducing medications simply treat the symptom, just like putting a bucket under a leaky ceiling.  Ever wonder why that ceiling is leaking or why your body is producing a fever?

So what causes fever?

When your temperature rises producing a fever, your immune system has failed to protect you from whatever illness you have.  Your body then attempts to fight because it knows something isn’t quite right.  By taking, or giving our children fever reducing medications we are actually inhibiting our body’s natural ability to fight.  Not only does fever stimulate our immune system, it also creates a ‘hot’ enough environment where many types of bacteria cannot survive.  So having a fever actually helps you get better!

What to do when fever strikes?

For the most part, nothing.  Allow the fever to run it’s course.  Plenty of fluids, rest and a tepid bath can help keep one feel comfortable during the course of the fever.  In our home, when fever strikes we load up on pure raw honey (for those over the age of 1) and organic apple cider vinegar.  Both are known for their ability to naturally fight infection and work wonderfully.

When should you worry?

There are of course instances where medical attention may be required for a fever:

1.  If the fever rises very high, very quickly

2.  Infants, especially under 3 months

3.  If the temperature rises above 104 (or above 102 in children under 3 years)

4.  If you child is acting very ill; this may also be a sign that something else may not be quite right

Our body has amazing abilities and is able to naturally heal itself if given the proper opportunity to do so.  Just give it a chance, you’ll be surprised!

Organic Fruits?  Organic Vegetables?  Organic Clothing?!  Where do we draw the line and is it all really necessary?  When it comes to food, there is no doubt that organic is BEST.  Think of a bug, a gross little creature that feeds on garbage, animal waste, dead animals, etc., etc.  When fresh crops are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and whatever other ‘cides’ they can invent, these bugs cannot survive.  Interesting isn’t it?  If these sprays are able to kill bugs capable of surviving on garbage and animal waste then surely these sprays can’t be good for us.   Increased levels of pesticides has been linked to cancer.  So we need to stay away.

Buying only organic can get pricey.  Here are some tips on what you can do to reduce your exposure to harmful pesticides while not burning a hole in your wallet.

Dirty Dozen

The EWG (Environmental Working Group) has come up with a list of foods that are highest in pesticide level and therefore should be purchased organic when possible.  They are the following:

  1. Celery
  2. Peaches
  3. Strawberries
  4. Apples
  5. Blueberries
  6. Nectarines
  7. Bell Peppers
  8. Spinach
  9. Cherries
  10. Kale/Collard Greens
  11. Potatoes
  12. Grapes (Imported)

Clean 15

If buying all organic is not something you are currently able to do, due to lack of availability or cost, then here’s another list you may find helpful.  The EWG also composed a list of foods that contain the lowest level of pesticides and are therefore not as harmful to your body when purchased non-organic.  They are the following:

  1. Onion
  2. Avocado
  3. Sweet Corn
  4. Pineapple
  5. Mango
  6. Sweet Peas
  7. Asparagus
  8. Kiwi
  9. Cabbage
  10. Eggplant
  11. Cantaloupe
  12. Watermelon
  13. Grapefruit
  14. Sweet Potato
  15. Honeydew Melon

Grow a Garden!

Last year we decided to start our first garden.  We purchased organic seeds and organic soil and planted every type of seed we could find.  It was definitely a learning experience, some grew, some didn’t, and some were eaten by our little rabbit friends, but boy did we enjoy the ones that flourished.  Loads of tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, arugula,  etc. and herbs galore!   We actually had enough tomatoes from one pack of seeds that we were able to freeze a large amount to use throughout the fall.  Purchasing all the seeds and the soil cost us approximately $35 (we obviously didn’t use any sprays on our garden).  It does involve time, but the amount of money you save and the fact you know without a doubt you have true organic fruits and vegetables is worth it.

Farmer’s Market

If growing a garden is not your cup of tea (I still think it’s worth giving it a try) then opt for your local farmer’s market.  Oftentimes they will have plenty of organic produce at a fraction of the supermarket cost.

Produce Spray

A final resort to help rid produce of harmful pesticides is a produce spray.  Although there are many on the market, you can make your own by simply mixing 1 tablespoon of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 cup of water.  Place it in a spray bottle, spray your produce and allow it to sit for approximately 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly.  It’s even a good idea to do this if all you buy is organic; think of all the hands that have touched your produce!

Don’t forget, you are what you eat!  Even though you cannot taste the pesticides in your food, they are there and they are dangerous.  My advice: it’s the beginning of May, start planting!!!

Giveaway!! Detox Time!!

Posted: April 15, 2011 in Uncategorized

More and more of us are on jumping on board and taking charge of our health and well being.  New organic items seem to be popping up on shelves daily as more people are steering away from processed foods, and staying away from toxic chemicals.  More and more people are doing their best to ditch the boxes and cans as they eat fresh nutrient rich foods to nourish their bodies.

What if you are 40, 50, 60 years old and have just recently started taking charge?  What about the years that have passed and the damage done to our bodies years ago? I know I myself was not this health conscious years ago.  Did I cause enough damage then that cannot be reversed?

Along with the increase in eating healthy is also an increase in trying to fix past damage done to the body by actually detoxifying one’s body.  Perhaps the most astounding types of ‘detox’ I have ever come across is that of the Gerson therapy, which individuals with chronic degenerative diseases, like cancer, embark upon.  The detox involves daily fresh organic juices (13 of them to be taken every hour) in addition to a number of coffee enemas and supplements.  All of this is done to activate the body’s ability to heal itself from disease.  Yes, you read correctly, your body can heal itself from disease.

So does it work?

I have been fortunate enough to be in contact with a brilliant woman who was healed through the Gerson therapy.  Years ago, author Faye Hueston became very ill and sought medical help for treatment of her illness.  After preforming a number of tests her doctors determined her illness was all in her head and suggested she see a psychiatrist.  She met various people and tried various types of therapy but was unable to get better, or even determine a cause of her illness.  She then learned of the Gerson therapy through her friend, a friend who was cured of malignant melanoma after her oncologist had given up on her.  Faye then embarked upon the Gerson therapy and discovered her illness was not mysterious or in her head, but instead Faye’s illness was a result of exposure to chemicals, from pharmaceuticals to pesticides to those found in our food, air and water.  Although Faye had a sensitivity to these chemicals, the exposure to these chemicals that made her ill are the same chemicals we are all exposed to on a daily basis.  This is serious stuff.  During her illness and struggle to heal herself, Faye kept a diary which she later published into her book Silent Enemy.   I purchased her wonderfully written book on Amazon.  It is written as a novel, so it is easy to follow and keeps you engaged in her struggle as you find yourself wanting to read more.  Perfect for a book club or if you are looking for a novel that will change the way you look at your life and daily exposure to the most common of everyday chemicals.  Faye sent me 3 copies of her book to do as a giveaway for my fans.  She particularly wanted to give her book to someone in need who could not afford it, so I will split up the giveaway.   I will set aside 2 books for anyone who cannot afford the book, if you fall into that category then please me at  For the rest of you looking for another wonderful chance at an awesome giveaway you can enter to win the book by doing the following:

1.  Share this post on your Facebook wall

2.  Comment on my Drug Free Pharmacist wall stating you have shared my post and would like to be entered in the giveaway

A winner will be randomly picked by the end of the day on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011.
